Map of the Tour

It was time again for a real tour this year. As we are in the beginning of a new round for a National Park Pass Tour, we decided to collect some in the Northern part. The weather was one of the important part for this.

Our main goal was Waterton Glacier NP near the Canadian border in Montana. But before that there were some

"detours" in our mind. We needed some more states, like Nevada, Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota and on the way back Washington and Oregon.

We started out on Friday 27th of June afternoon from Hollister, in 110°F going North on I5. What a release, when we came on Hwy 88 in higher elevation. In Carson City was our first overnight stay. The bad thing about that was a car show that weekend, even a average Motel charged us a high price, lucky us we did get a room at least.

The next day we headed for the loniest road Hwy50. We think, they should rename it. There are more loniest roads in other places than this is. But we were able to do a short speed test with our bikes on a long good visible stretch out there. The 1800 showed 115mph, before I felt it was enough for me. Reiner did the same speed with his 1200 and was surprised how stable it was at this speed at all.

After this kick, we picked up the stamp for Nevada at the Great Basin NP.

On the whole tour we wanted to avoid Freeways as much as possible. And we did it until we came to I90 in Wyoming and I5 heading home South from Oregon.

1.Incident. This was when the road ended up in a washed out, more or less a 4x4 road.

It was the Fort Laramie Rd. In Wyoming coming from the West. We stopped and wanted to ask a driver, just coming out of this road. But we must have scared this elderly driver to death. Reiner was just going to ask him about the length of this road condition, when he speeded up and run Reiner almost over. Maybe the driver feared about his 4 elderly ladies in his big SUV....... So we decided to risk it without knowing the exact condition. 15 Miles , sandy traces and dust, maneuvering almost 800 pounds and then too late for the stamp of the Fort. Well, more of an adventure.

2. Incident happened in Montana on US83 going North to Columbia Falls. Speed Limit was 70mph through forest parts. I was just off the CB with Reiner, telling him, that it's crazy to go over 55mph her, when a deer jumped on the road from the right side. I locked the rear tire short, but could handle the bike very well in this situation. The deer looked at me without any hurry crossing just 6 feet in front of the bike. Reiner had more of a hard time to slow down the 1200, well 15 years between the two bikes. We didn't even go 55mph after that in this region.

Glacier NP was something you must have been. Most important is, you should fill up your gas tank. I know my husband, he likes to go to the limit. But in this case, even he was happy about the fact, that the last miles down from Glacier, Southbound on Hwy2, were mostly downhill. At the gasstation even the fuellfilter was empty.

But we were more impressed by Mt.Rainier and Mt.St.Helens. And the backcountry streets are one of the finest, we were on so far. But we must admit, if there is sun all the way in Washington and Oregon and not one raindrop, it's pure luck!

After 7 days and 4500mi we were home again. We could enjoy the 4th of July firework and the great event in Hollister the "Independence Rally".

We need now 3 new tires and the next tour is already in our mind........Lobster in MAINE!!!!! But I think it will be 2-up on the 1800, because "Black Lilly" would have a hard time over this distance. In this case I will rather go for the hard time for me, as a passenger again J

Here are some roads worth a picture and a ride again:

Hwy 89/6 in Utah

Hwy34 in Wyoming between North of Laramie and Wheatland

Hwy Alt14 with the Big Horn Canyon Between I90 and Cody,WY

Glacier road West and East on Hwy 89/49/2

Yakima Canyon, Hwy WA821, North of Yakima,WA

Hwy 410 to Mtn Rainier

Mtn. St.Helens Eastside
